Update from the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office regarding traffic stop incident

Rockwall, TX (October 1, 2024) – A Rockwall County Sheriff’s Deputy was unharmed last night after being shot at in the High Point Lake Estates neighborhood of Rockwall County.

This incident occurred when the deputy attempted to make a traffic stop of a vehicle with an obscured paper tag and the vehicle failed to stop. The vehicle led the deputy to a neighborhood where a passenger fired multiple rounds. At least one round hit the bumper of the deputy’s vehicle. The vehicle exited the neighborhood and continued north on FM 548. Near State Highway 276, the passenger jumped out of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle continued to flee north on FM 548 and crashed near the intersection of FM 548 and I-30. The driver did not exit the vehicle upon officer commands. Officers approached after it was determined the driver was no longer moving and he was removed from the vehicle.

The driver was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The passenger who jumped from the vehicle was found bloodied and injured by paramedics. The passenger was transported for medical treatment.

Cash and a weapon were found in the vehicle.

Positive identification of the driver and passenger is still being determined. The investigation is ongoing.
