ROCKWALL, TX (April 2026) — Members of the Rockwall City Council traded their usual roles for bunker gear last Saturday as they stepped into the boots of local firefighters during the Rockwall Professional Firefighters Association (Local 5057) Fire Ops 101 event.

Hosted at the Rowlett Training Facility, the immersive experience gave city leaders a firsthand look at the challenges firefighters face in the line of duty. From battling live flames to participating in a vehicle extrication exercise, participants gained a deeper understanding of the skill, teamwork, and intensity required in emergency response.

Council members suited up in full bunker gear (protective turnout gear) and took part in a series of hands-on training scenarios, including a second-story apartment fire simulation complete with real fire and smoke. The controlled environment allowed participants to safely experience the physical and mental demands firefighters encounter on every call.

Several Rockwall firefighters were on hand to guide the council members through each evolution and ensure safety throughout the day. The event was led by Captain Josh Turner, alongside members of the RPFA and the Station 1C crew, including Michael Sauder, Jase Kirkpatrick, and Garrett Green.

Also in attendance were Fire Chief Kenneth Cullins, Battalion Chief Jay McKee, and Health and Safety Chief Nathan Dower, underscoring the department’s commitment to education and community engagement.

“We had a blast with the Council and they did a great job,” said RPFA President Michael Caffey. “We got it pretty hot and smoky in there, and they all came through with flying colors.”

Participants included Mayor Tim McCallum and council members Richard Henson, Dennis Lewis, Anna Campbell, and Sedric Thomas. Council candidate John Hagaman also joined in the training exercises.

The Fire Ops 101 event not only strengthened relationships between city leadership and the fire department, but also provided valuable insight into the resources, training, and dedication required to protect the Rockwall community.
