GARLAND, TX (May 5, 2026) — Garland Independent School District has earned the distinction of H-E-B Texas District of the Year, receiving one of the state’s highest honors in public education along with $100,000 to support continued innovation and student opportunities.
The recognition reflects the collective impact of nearly 50,000 students, staff, families, and community partners across 68 campuses in Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse.
Superintendent Dr. Ricardo López accepted the award on behalf of the district.
“This recognition extends to every part of our district, from our bus drivers to our teachers, principals, and everyone who plays a role in supporting our students,” López said. “It reflects the work happening every day to serve students and change lives.”
He added that while the district’s size brings complexity, its purpose remains consistent.
“We’re a large district serving students across three cities, each with unique needs,” he said. “Our work is centered on transforming the lives of every child and ensuring a bright future for each of them.”
He also recognized the role of district leadership and community partnership.
“It starts with our School Board and extends throughout our organization,” López said. “We are grateful for their partnership and the time they dedicate to supporting our students and staff.”
The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program recognizes outstanding public school districts and educators across Texas through a rigorous, multi-phase selection process involving educators, community leaders, and past recipients. Finalists are evaluated through interviews and site visits before statewide winners are selected.
Garland ISD was named among a select group of finalists representing high-performing districts across the state.
“In every corner of Texas, educators are guiding students through a rapidly changing world while helping them build confidence, curiosity, and a sense of possibility,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Senior Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs. “At a time when the role of public education is more important than ever, we are proud to recognize these exceptional leaders who are strengthening not only their classrooms, but their communities and the future of our state.”
López reflected on the broader meaning of the recognition.
“People believe in public education, and that belief drives the work we do every day,” he said.
The district will use the $100,000 award to expand innovative programs and enhance learning opportunities for students.
