ROCKWALL, TX (May 8, 2026) — Blue Ribbon News recently received the following Letter to the Editor from Rachel Gilmore, a student in the Texas Tech K-12 program, who was encouraged to write about a charitable cause and share it with a local news source. We are pleased to publish her thoughtful message encouraging the Rockwall community to support textile recycling and local charitable efforts.
Dear Dawn Redig and the Blue Ribbon News Team,
As a reader of Blue Ribbon News and a proponent of the uplifting, community-driven stories you share, I am writing to advocate for a cause that combines local, neighborly support with global environmental responsibility: Comeback Clothes.
I am urging our Rockwall community to join the Comeback Clothes movement by donating or recycling their unwanted clothes and textiles.
It is estimated that over 95% of used clothing, footwear, and household fabrics can be reused or recycled. Yet, a staggering amount of these materials ends up in landfills, where they take years to decompose, releasing greenhouse gases. By participating in textile recycling, we can make a tangible difference in three key areas:
Protecting Our Planet: Textile production is highly resource-intensive. Recycling clothes saves water and energy, and for every pound of clothing diverted from landfills, we save roughly three to four pounds from entering our atmosphere.
Supporting Vulnerable Populations: The “Comeback” aspect is vital; our unwanted items often have a second life. Through programs like the World Wear Project or supporting local organizations like Rockwall Helping Hands, these items help create jobs and provide affordable clothing for those in need.
Local Impact: By donating to local charities such as Helping Hands Thrift Store in Rockwall, we keep our community clean, support local employment, and raise funds for important, locally-focused missions.
With our annual wardrobe changes, I encourage everyone to “clean for a cause.” Instead of throwing out torn, worn, or unwanted textiles, we can bag them separately and drop them off at local donation centers.
Let’s turn our unwanted textiles into a force for good.
Thank you, Blue Ribbon News, for continuing to shine a light on positive initiatives that make a difference in Rockwall County.
Sincerely,
Rachel Gilmore
