ROCKWALL, TX (June 1, 2026) Rockwall Summer Musicals (RSM) has crafted a Broadway experience with a show that often is listed with the top shows that have ever graced the stage. West Side Story, the musical re-telling of Romeo and Juliet amongst the cultural struggles in mid-twentieth century New York City, opens June 19 for six performances. With one of the largest casts in RSM history and dazzling dance and soaring music, North Texas will be treated to a production that will offer audiences some of the best regional talent available.
The production under Director Keeli James brings her take to an exciting show with classic songs Tonight, Maria, America, and I Feel Pretty.
“West Side Story has always felt deeply human to me,” explains James. “Beneath the beautiful music and choreography, it’s really a story about young people desperately wanting to belong, to be loved, and to be understood. That part never gets old. I think audiences still connect to it because those emotions are timeless.”
Ana Caballero takes on the role of the young Puerto Rican immigrant Maria. “I grew up in a very protective household, so I truly connect with Maria’s experience. Coming from a Hispanic family, I understand the balance between seeking independence and respecting family traditions, which makes Maria feel very real to me,” Caballero says. “One of my favorite moments is the Balcony Scene (reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet). The music is incredibly beautiful, and the dialogue perfectly captures the excitement and intensity of first love.”
The boy from the other side of the New York barrio is young Tony, played by Brendan Reimer. “Tony was once part of the Jets gang; he longs for something larger from his life than what simply being a part of a gang has to offer,” explains Reimer. “My favorite song in the show is Maria, as it beautifully depicts the emotional tidal wave someone experiences when falling in love at first sight.”
James sums up the show themes. “At its core, this story reminds us what can happen when people stop seeing each other as human beings — and how powerful love, understanding, and connection can be.”
West Side Story runs June 19-28th at the Rockwall ISD Performing Arts Center 1200 T L Townsend Drive with three evening shows and three matinees. Ticket and Show information at RockwallSummerMusicals.org
