Sparks Clinic celebrates 80 years of caring for Rockwall families

ROCKWALL, TX (July 15, 2026) — Eighty years ago, when Rockwall was still a small farming community with fewer than 1,500 residents, one physician opened a practice built on a simple promise: care for people like family.

On July 10, friends, longtime patients, community leaders and generations of Rockwall families gathered to celebrate that promise as Sparks Clinic marked its 80th anniversary—honoring not only one of the county’s oldest continuously operating businesses, but also a family legacy that has helped shape healthcare in Rockwall for generations.

The milestone celebration welcomed a number of special guests, including Dr. Randy Sparks, who traveled from his home in Florida to be part of the occasion. Returning to Rockwall for the anniversary, Dr. Randy reconnected with longtime friends, former patients and community members while helping celebrate a family legacy that has touched generations of local families.

Guests also enjoyed live musical entertainment provided by Brett Morrison of Morrison Guitar Shop, adding to the festive atmosphere as attendees reflected on eight decades of hometown healthcare.

Founded in 1946, Dr. Sherman Sparks established the Rockwall Osteopathic Clinic and Laboratory on the second floor above Cunningham Drug Store, where Zanata now stands. When a fire destroyed the building in 1952, Dr. Sparks looked to the future, breaking ground at the corner of Kaufman and 2nd streets for what would become the first permanent Sparks Clinic—a location that would serve generations of Rockwall families.

That chapter grew even stronger in 1976, when Dr. Sherman’s sons, Dr. Randy Sparks and Dr. Robert “Dr. Bob” Sparks, returned home to join the family practice. Their arrival marked both an expansion of the clinic and the continuation of a family tradition in medicine dating back to the 1890s. Together, Dr. Randy and Dr. Bob built upon their father’s vision of compassionate, patient-centered care, helping make Sparks Clinic a trusted name in Rockwall healthcare. Following Dr. Bob’s passing in 2022, his legacy continues to inspire the physicians, staff and Sparks family members who carry forward the clinic’s patient-first philosophy today.

As part of the anniversary celebration, attendees also enjoyed a special replay of Dr. Bob’s 2017 lecture on pioneer medicine, originally presented as part of the Rockwall County Historical Foundation’s lecture series. The presentation offered a fascinating look at the evolution of healthcare in early Rockwall while showcasing Dr. Bob’s passion for preserving local history.

While much has changed in medicine over the past eight decades, one thing has remained remarkably consistent at Sparks Clinic: its commitment to personalized, relationship-based healthcare.

In an era when many independent physician practices have become part of larger healthcare systems, Sparks Clinic has remained proudly family-owned and independently operated—a distinction the practice embraces with its guiding philosophy of “remaining fiercely independent to provide quality patient care.”

Today, that mission continues through a dedicated team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and staff, including four members of the Sparks family who remain actively involved in the clinic’s day-to-day operations, led by Mike R. Jackson, MD. The clinic also continues the aviation medicine tradition established by Dr. Randy and Dr. Bob through Andres Katz, MD, Senior AME, HIMS, who provides FAA medical certification services to help keep pilots safely in the air. Sparks Clinic also continues to offer Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals, carrying forward another longstanding service to the community. Together, the team continues providing comprehensive family medicine while honoring the values established by Dr. Sherman Sparks 80 years ago.

For many patients, Sparks Clinic represents far more than a medical office.

It is where childhood checkups became sports physicals. Where young parents brought babies who would one day return with children of their own. Where physicians remembered family histories long before electronic medical records existed, and where trust was built one patient, one visit and one generation at a time.

Today’s Sparks Clinic offers modern diagnostic services, preventive care, chronic disease management, telehealth, urgent care and wellness services while maintaining the same hometown approach that has defined the practice since 1946.

The celebration marked more than an anniversary for one business. It honored eight decades of relationships, compassion and continuity that have made Sparks Clinic part of the fabric of Rockwall County.

In a community that has transformed dramatically over the past 80 years, Sparks Clinic remains a familiar constant—a place where patients are more than appointments, neighbors are treated like family, and a legacy of caring continues one generation at a time.
