Local artist Julie Woodard will lead ‘The Art of Basketry’ at the Harry Myers Community Center
ROCKWALL, TX (Sept. 24, 2026) The Rockwall Art League will host “The Art of Basketry,” a beginner-friendly handwoven basket workshop led by local artist Julie Woodard, from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Harry Myers Community Center, 807 E. Washington St., in Rockwall.
Participants will learn several basket weaving techniques as they create their own handwoven basket. No experience is needed. The $40 fee covers all supplies and snacks.
“Basket weaving is a simple skill that artisans have used for millennia,” Woodard said. “I’m happy to share this timeless skill and artform with anyone who wants to give it a try.”
Woodard is a certified art therapist whose career includes 20 years in geriatric health care and 25 years in education. She works largely in mixed media and has a deep background in fiber arts, including quilting, smocking and nearly all needle arts.
She and her husband of 44 years, Scott, have four children and 13 grandchildren, with a 14th due in February. When she isn’t making art, she’s usually with her grandchildren or looking for new ways to share creativity with others.

The workshop comes one week before the league’s 26th Annual Juried Fine Art Show & Sale, Oct. 16-18 at The Center at Rockwall City Place.
