September 30, 2012 – Some believe the quality of a school district can be equated with the quality of its teachers. Garland ISD believes that staff members like Willie Bogar, literacy and math specialist at Walnut Glen Academy, are a testament to the district’s commitment to student success.
Bogar is a 44-year veteran of education, serving 43 years in GISD. Recently recognized for that service by the Garland Branch of the NAACP, she was named the organization’s Educator of the Year on Sept. 15.
“I was honored at the Freedom Fund Brunch with a beautiful plaque, fantastic standing ovation, and the marvelous opportunity to greet some of my former students and colleagues,” said Bogar. “It was a joyous day to be surrounded by so many congratulations and well wishes.”
Honored for positively impacting the lives of hundreds of Garland ISD students, Bogar has a self-proclaimed passion for teaching and sharing knowledge with others.
“I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. They all have the potential to bring something special to the world, and if I teach them well, they will become productive citizens in society.”
Bogar’s excellence in education has also been recognized by other organizations. The Eastern Hills Kiwanis Club of Garland named her a top teacher, she was selected as a runner-up for the district’s Teacher of the Year award, and she received a Lifetime PTA Membership from the State of Texas. But Bogar’s most memorable recognitions are those from former students.
“The best moments are when they recognize me out and about in the Garland area, and we are able to share a few moments to chat with each other.”
