(ROCKWALL-December 12, 2012) During its first monthly Community Connections Coffee on December 11, Student Council officers at Rockwall Christian Academy welcomed leadership from the City of Rowlett.
“We wanted to reach out to local leadership and really connect with our community in a more personal way,” said Secondary Principal Tony Rorie.
Mayor Todd Gottel, City Manager Lynda Humble, Fire Chief Don Poovey and Police Chief Mike Brodnax toured the campus and met many of RCA’s students before sitting down to coffee and doughnuts, carefully arranged in the conference room by RCA Class Representatives.
Students asked a number of questions, leading to discussions on careers in city government, explanations about Rowlett’s vision for the city, economic development, volunteer opportunities and transportation. They even offered advice on career considerations and volunteering.
City Manager Lynda Humble took the opportunity to explain the critical role of city government to the students.
“Whether you are Democrat or Republican, there is an undercurrent that government is bad,” said Humble. “Most people don’t appreciate the quality of life that we have come to take for granted today. So I tell people when you turn the faucet on and you drink water, not stopping to think one second about the quality of that water, you have the government to thank for that. When you get in a bind, or your house is on fire, and you call 911, and the cavalry shows up” (here, she motioned to the police and fire chief, sitting on either side of her),” you need to thank the government to thank for that.”
One of the students admitted he had never actually even considered a career in city government until now, but that it was definitely something he would think about, after getting a better understanding of it.
The Student Council is already working on next month’s event, while employing some of the valuable advice offered by Rowlett City Leaders.
“The information they shared inspired us to go out and get active,” said Chris Stephens, Sophomore Class Representative, “…to do something in our community to help further our city’s growth.”
