1776 is under the helm of Becky Henderson, recently retired from 35 years as an area educator and seasoned director. With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and book by Peter Stone, 1776 premiered on Broadway in 1969 and is based on the events leading up the drafting and signing of the Declaration of Independence. John Adams, disliked by many in Congress, joins up with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson to bring forward a resolution for independence that set America free from England’s tyranny. Powerful performances and an impeccably crafted script make 1776 as relevant today as it was when this piece was first written.
ABOUT ROCKWALL SUMMER MUSICALS
Rockwall Summer Musicals is a theatre company formed for the purpose of producing plays and conducting intergenerational theatrical workshops from May through August each year. Our unique “mentoring” instructional approach provides an educational experience that cannot be reproduced in the classroom. Pairing students with working artisans in our own community creates a learning experience that cannot be duplicated during the school year. Whereas funding for the arts seems to be ever shrinking, our efforts help subsidize the educational needs of area students interested in theatre arts. During each school year, RSM prepares for the next summer season, including fundraising, reading and selecting plays, marketing, and seeking additional instructional opportunities. RSM’s productions are funded by business, corporate, and individual donations, ticket sales, and paid memberships. Net revenues are used for overhead expenses and as seed money for future productions and to enhance the theatre arts education of students of all ages.
