Jacket Backers name student athletes of the month

(ROCKWALL ISD-May 15, 2013) The Rockwall High School Jacket Backers have selected Miranda Larkin as the Lady Jacket Athlete of the Month and Gaines Kinsey as the Yellowjacket Athlete of the Month.

Larkin, a 12th grade member of the soccer team, was nominated by Coach Melissa Garcia and chosen by the Jacket Backers board.

Miranda is the very essence of Jacket Fight and everything we want our student-athletes to be at Rockwall High School.  Her work ethic and determination are testaments to the values and morals her parents have given her. She has led through example for four years and has left a legacy with the underclassmen in the program that they will strive to live up to for years to come. She works to improve herself not only academically and athletically but morally and emotionally. She reads books to improve herself as she goes through athletics, academics and life. She decided in her last year at RHS to work out with the track team to improve and extend herself.

“Miranda is the type of student-athlete that coaches hope for in their careers. She is self-motivated, determined, enthusiastic and passionate about her endeavors –  soccer, art, and school in general. She leads through example and is a positive role model for her teammates.  It has been an honor and a privilege to coach such a superior student-athlete, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!” Coach Garcia said.

Also nominated were Hayley Barker (Softball), Kaylee Hinton (Track), and Cadie Gaubatz (Golf).

Kinsey, a 12th grade member of the varsity track team was nominated by Coach Will McCrary and chosen by the Jacket Backers board.

During the month of April, Gaines was the District Champion in the 400 and 800 meters, qualified for regionals in the 400 and 800 meters plus pole vault, and qualified for State in the 800 meter while setting a new school record in the event with a time of 1:53.85.

“I Told Gaines before he ran the 800 meters at the regional finals that I wasn’t ready for this ride to end.  Gaines response was ‘I am not either and I can do it,’” said Coach McCrary.

Also receiving nominations for the month were Nick Wintermute (Gymnastics) and Dylan Yarbrough (Golf).
