ROCKWALL, TX (April 29, 2014) Recording star Jason Castro, of American Idol fame, and the 20+ piece US Air National Guard Band of the Southwest orchestra will headline the first annual Rockwall Memorial Day Concert, Sunday, May 25, 7 pm, at The Harbor amphitheater, to thank and salute the nation’s veterans, active-duty military, those who have lost their lives and their families.
Modeled after the National Memorial Day Concert, held annually in Washington DC., the event will feature patriotic and inspirational music by professional and local entertainers, dramatic readings of true veterans’ stories, short speeches by dignitaries and musical recognition of attending military.
Professional entertainers include contemporary jazz saxophonist David Carr Jr., country artist Brittnee Lee, country artist Jason Crabtree, and gospel singer Beverly Oliver Massegee. Local entertainers include musical theater performer Whitney Rosenbalm, Rockwall High School country/pop music singer Jamie Timpa, Rockwall High School opera singer Jessica Brunson, and the 12+ member Lakeside Civic Chorus.
Speakers include Congressman Ralph Hall, a former WWII US Navy Lt. and pilot; Rockwall County Judge Jerry Hogan, US Army Lt. Col. (retired); and US Air Force Major General Kim Siniscalchi, former White House Assistant Surgeon General who served Presidents Bill Clinton and George H. Bush as Air Force Nurse.
High-ranking military officers will attend, courtesy of the Greater Dallas Military Foundation. Patriot Paws will be on hand with their service dogs for wounded warriors. A Paralyzed Veterans of America Color Guard, featuring veterans in wheelchairs, will present the colors, perform a three-round gun salute and Taps will be played.
Special hotel and motel rates are available by mentioning the “Memorial Day Concert” code when reserving rooms at Rockwall properties.
The event is presented by The Rockwall News. Executive producer is Rockwall News owner/publisher J.J. Smith, son of a severely-injured World War II US Army tank commander, who returned home with acute Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and eventually committed suicide.
