ROCKWALL, TX (May 24, 2014) When I was a little girl growing up in the late 50s, my mother belonged to the Readers Digest Record of the Month Club. I can still remember the thrill I felt when the flat cardboard box arrived in the mail. Mom would open the box and pull out the record – uh, I mean the LP, – uh, I mean the album, oh, never mind kids, just Google “record album”! She would gleefully read who the artist on the album cover was and then take it directly to the Hi Fi (High Fidelity) in the living room and place it on the turntable (Google it) and we would listen to the whole thing, both sides.
I was youngest of a big family, and everyone was in school except me. I had the house and my mother to myself and would listen to her sing along and watch her sway to the music as she stood at the sink or did chores around the house. She would let me flip the record over again and again and I would know all the songs and their lyrics within a day or two.
Today, when I hear those songs, I can see my mom dancing and hear her young voice. So just imagine the thrills and chills I got when I recently dropped in on a rehearsal of FOREVER PLAID at Rockwall Community Playhouse! The show features beloved numbers from iconic 50s performers such as Perry Como, Dean Martin, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett and many other favorites. Songs like Catch a Falling Star, No, Not Much, Rags to Riches and Papa Loves Mambo – to name just a few.
What a sweet, nostalgic production this show is and OH, how my mom would have enjoyed it! But younger folks will enjoy it just as much because the songs are brought to you by a quartet of handsome and talented (mom would call them dreamy) young men that are sure to have audiences of all ages charmed and engaged. They call themselves The Plaids.
In the story, The Plaids are ghosts. They are killed in an accident on the way to pick up their matching plaid jackets for their first concert. That’s where the story begins! The group is brought back to life through the magical power of Harmony and the Expanding Holes in the Ozone to perform this fabulously entertaining and memory provoking hit parade. RCP audiences get to witness the boys’ one and only concert before they’re called to return to the cosmos.
Tickets to see FOREVER PLAID would be a perfect Mothers Day gift OR a perfect date night idea. A wonderful night of Theater is guaranteed for all!
Forever Plaid runs May 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25. Directed by Richard James. Assistant Director/Stage Manager is Katlyn Snader; Producer, Mary Thacker; Assistant Stage Manager, Anne-Marie Thacker; Lights/Sound, Bryce Brewer.
