ROCKWALL, TX (Jan. 7, 2015) Rockwall Baseball and Softball League player Conner Helms was selected by the Baseball Youth All-American program to participate in the 2015 Winter Games in Vero Beach, Florida. Conner was one of only four 8U/9U players selected from the state of Texas to participate in the recent event which had representation from 36 states and Puerto Rico.
Conner has played baseball with the North Texas Lumberjacks since he was five years old, where he played on both a T-Ball and Coach Pitch team at the YMCA in Rockwall. He joined RBSL as a 6U T-Ball Player, and he has played three seasons with the organization.
Conner participated in the 2014 USSSA “A” Division State Tournament with the 7U Lumberjacks where they placed 2nd, and he was a member of the 2014 USSSA “A” World Series Champion 7U Lumberjacks. Conner now plays for the NT Lumberjacks – Helms “AA” team within RBSL. Conner had a strong showing at the event competing against some of the top 8U and 9U players in the country.
“I cannot wait to see if I can make the team again!” Conner said.
The Baseball Youth All-American Games Winter Session was sponsored by Majestic Athletic, and it took place starting New Year’s Day and went through Jan. 4 in Vero Beach at Historic Dodgertown. Nearly 400 players took part in the four-day event featuring some of the top players in travel baseball throughout the United States.
Players selected for the All-American Games are placed on teams with other individuals from around the nation. Teams squared off in each age group in a fun yet competitive tournament to see who would claim bragging rights. The event began with Opening Ceremonies that Thursday evening at Holman Stadium. Players were honored that evening and play started the next morning. Saturday, the players took part in an evening Skills Competition leading up to Sunday’s Championship Day.
The first Baseball Youth All-American Games were held at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana this past July with over 260 players making the trip. Players are selected through National Tryouts or a nomination process, and thousands of players were considered for the winter All-American session with fewer than 400 making the cut.
Conner’s Majestic RED team got off to an early start with a win over Coastal BLUE only to falter in their next two pool games dropping both to Majestic GREY and Majestic NAVY; however, the RED Team was not done. The RED team knocked off the undefeated GREY team in Bracket play advancing to the Championship Game where they came up just short finishing a respectable 2nd place behind the Majestic NAVY Team. Aside from providing a solid offensive performance, Conner also served as the team’s primary 2nd baseman in addition to playing both the pitcher and catcher catch position as needed.
