(ROCKWALL, TX – Nov 5, 2015) The Rockwall Fire Department received a report of strong odor similar to that of a petroleum based product, while driving through the intersection of N. Lakeshore Drive and West Rusk Street in Rockwall. The Rockwall Fire Department discovered the appearance of a petroleum product on the water in the drainage channel located to the south of the intersection.
The Fire Department deployed absorbent equipment in the channel to contain the spill and is currently preventing it from reaching Lake Ray Hubbard. Due to the nature of the spill, the exact quantity of material cannot be confirmed and the source of the spill is still under investigation.
The Rockwall Fire Department is working with The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to coordinate response and recovery actions. A private environmental clean-up company is working to mitigate the incident. The Rockwall Fire Department and TCEQ will continue to monitor the situation to ensure public health and safety.
Residents are advised to stay clear of the drainage channel while the clean-up is in progress. If you have any questions regarding the ongoing efforts and clean up, residents may contact the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality at 817-588-5800 or Chief Mark Poindexter at 972-771-7770.
