(ROCKWALL, TX – June 26, 2017) Around 200 triathletes and runners hit the race course at the JER Chilton YMCA at Rockwall early Sunday morning for the Y Rock Sprint Triathlon, 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Run.
Presented by the Sports Medicine Center at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Rockwall, the Y Rock Sprint Triathlon this year had a course that was all on-road and included a 300-yard snake swim, a 9.5-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run along the lake next to the Rockwall Y soccer fields.
Jeff Case (23) was the first triathlete in the water and the first to cross the finish line with a total time of 46:22. Case, a recent Clemson grad from North Carolina who moved to Rockwall two weeks ago, has been a runner and a swimmer for a long time but only recently started picking up the bike. He said he was looking for a sprint-type competition to ease himself back into racing when he found the Y Rock on Playtri’s website.
“In most races, I know people who will always take wrong turns. The Y Rock was very well laid out and I had no issues getting around on the course,” Case said. “I loved the lake setting on the run.”
New to the Y Rock this year was a 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Run sponsored by Modern Woodmen. Eighteen-year-old Rockwall native Hayden Ray finished first in the 5K Run with a time of 22:03.
Net proceeds from the Y Rock benefited the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA, whose mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The funds help ensure that everyone can participate in Y programs, regardless of their financial situation.
