(Lewisville) With jaw-dropping contests like the World Tamale-Eating Championship and headliner acts like Pat Green and Josh Abbott Band, Lewisville’s seventh annual Western Days festival will have everyone boot-scootin’ over to Old Town Lewisville Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23 and 24.

Festival-goers will enjoy Texas country music and live entertainment on three stages, including performances by the North Texas Square Dancers Association, Lewisville Civic Chorale, Cross Timbers YMCA Kickers and the Fiddle Rascals.

There will be gunfight re-enactments, trick ropers, a car show, arts and crafts, and cooking demonstrations. There’s even a Stickhorse Rodeo for the kids. The Tailwaggers Ranch pet zone will feature animal rescue groups, trainers and contests.

World Tamale-Eating Championship

Registration is underway for the World Tamale-Eating Championship, scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 on the front steps of Lewisville City Hall,151 W. Church St.

The event is organized by the Lewisville Convention and Visitors Bureau and officially sanctioned by Major League Eating. A total purse of $3,500 will be paid to the contest’s top six finishers.

The current world record holder is Tim “Eater X” Janus of New York City. He consumed 71 tamales in 12 minutes, winning the 2007 title.  In 2010, he took the world title again by eating three more tamales than his top competitor, Sonya “Black Widow” Thomas. That time he ate 59 tamales in 12 minutes.

The only Texan to win the world title in tamale-eating is Levi Oliver of Austin, who ate 36 tamales in 10 minutes, 30 seconds during the inaugural World Tamale-Eating Championship held at Bassmaster Elite 50 Country Fair at Lewisville Lake in 2005.
