Bier Barrell Rolling & Bowling, Dachshund Dash, German Karaoke – it’s all in fun

(Addison) Join more than 60,000 fans of polka, German food and Spaten Bier as they celebrate Oktoberfest 2011 with live music, folk dancing and sing-alongs Thursday, Sept. 15 through Sunday, Sept. 18 in Addison Circle Park.

The annual event coincides with the opening of the 16-day Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, Germany, which ends the first weekend in October.

Entertainment

At 8 p.m. opening night, Addison Mayor Todd Meier, along with the help of local dignitaries, will officially tap the first keg of Spaten from Germany by hammering a bronze spout into the keg with a wooden mallet. (The trick, event organizers say, is not to spill any bier!)

Festival-goers can sing along to “Ein Pro-sit” and “No Beer in Heaven” – the lyrics to which many may recall: “In Heaven there is no beer, that’s why we drink it here. And when we’re gone from here, our friends will be drinking all the beer!”

The 30,000 square foot air-conditioned “Schloss Addison” tent will  feature live entertainment from Brave Combo, Royal Klobasneks, Walburg Boys, Alpine Village Dancers, Alpenmusikanten and the Texanischer Schuhplattler Verien (Wood Cutters Dance).

Also, don’t miss the German Spelling Bee at 7:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, festival-goers can try their hand at Bier Barrel Rolling and Bier Barrel Bowling. And on Sunday, it’s our personal favorite: the Dachschund Parade and Dachshund Dash

At Das Kinder Stage, children of all ages will enjoy performances by Mr. Energy, Side Street Circus, Bonkers the Clown, the Napper Sisters, Alpine Children’s Dancers, STV Almrausch, Ballet de Force, and Poof! It’s a Magic Show.

Returning to Addision Oktoberfest is ‘Karaoke gone German.’ Twenty-five contestants will yodel for prizes beginning at 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Bowl Stage. A panel of judges will score German Idol participants based upon stage presence, audience appeal, dynamics and technique, difficulty, uniqueness and overall presentation. There will be age divisions for adults (19-plus) and children (18 and under).

 Addison Biz-Spiele (Corporate Challenge)

The Addison Business Association will present the Addison Biz-Spiele, or Corporate Challenge, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 at Sporthalle, Addison Conference Centre.  This is an opportunity for Addison organizations to engage in friendly competition in Bier Barrel Rolling, a Stein Race and Bier Barrel Bowling.
