(Rowlett) Feb. 1, 2012 – Lake Pointe Health Network has received the Patriotic Employer Award given by the Department of Defense in recognition of its Adopt a Soldier campaign in December, 2010 and the continued support of an employee throughout his deployment.

LPHN was nominated for this award by one of our employees serving in the United States Army, with the Texas Army National Guard, Mr. John Alred, a tech in our emergency department.

LPHN employees joined with many other local employers in the ‘Adopt a Soldier for the Holidays’ program.  The LPHN employees were more than willing to donate items for our soldier and his company, C Co 3-124 Cav serving in Ghazni, Afghanistan.  They even received numerous donations from other local businesses and residents to include.

All told, LPHN employees and volunteers were able to mail 76 care packages to John, his company, and two other service men that are relatives of LPHN employees.  The care packages were filled with food and personal items ranging from shampoo, toothpaste and lip balm, to soups and snack foods.

“The staff in the ED really took this campaign to heart, each shift challenging the other shift for who could donate the most items.  We communicated with John on a regular basis through email and Facebook to let him know he was continually in our thoughts and prayers,” said Jackie Cox, RN, director of emergency services at LPHN.  “John is a valued member of our staff and we are extremely proud of his service to our country, ensuring the freedoms we have each and every day.”

Upon his return to the states, John shared with his co-workers his many stories from his time in Afghanistan.  He explained how the care packages provided everyone with a touch from home that they had not had for some time.

“We stockpiled all the items into one location.  And whenever a soldier needed a toothbrush or an envelope or a snack, they could visit our make-shift store to find whatever they needed,” explained John.  “It was great to receive all the care packages and help to share the caring spirit of Lake Pointe with all my fellow soldiers.”
