Child nutrition managers earn grants for nutrition/fitness program

Superintendent of Schools Jeff Bailey; Karen Siedloczek, child nutrition manager at Virginia Reinhardt Elementary; Peter Hamilton, child nutrition manager at Amy Parks-Heath Elementary; and RISD Director of Child Nutrition Julie Farris.

(Rockwall ISD) At the regularly scheduled meeting of the Rockwall ISD Board of Trustees on Monday, Feb. 20, two Rockwall ISD campus cafeteria managers were recognized for their efforts to successfully secure grants to start a campus-based nutrition/fitness program called Fuel Up to Play 60.

Karen Siedloczek, the child nutrition manager at Virginia Reinhardt Elementary, and Peter Hamilton, the child nutrition manager at Amy Parks-Heath Elementary were both awarded $4,000 grants from Dairy Max in order to kick off their Fuel Up to Play 60 programs.

Fuel Up to Play 60 encourages campuses to collaborate on an initiative that will get students to “fuel up” with nutrient-rich foods while being active for 60 minutes or more a day.  Both Hamilton and Siedloczek worked with their campus PE teachers, their principals and other staff to develop a plan to submit for the grant.

The Fuel Up to Play 60 program creates a framework for adults and students to work together to implement school-improving changes that best meet the school’s wellness goals.  The ultimate goal is for students to make healthy decisions, take action for change and encourage their friends to do the same.

Also on hand for the recognition was Julie Farris, the district’s director of child nutrition.  Farris was recognized for encouraging her staff to pursue innovative nutritional programs.
