McKinney announces Healthy Challenge

Events across city aimed at helping make McKinney healthiest city in country

(McKinney) April 18, 2012 –  McKinney has been named one of the best places to live in the country, but leaders from organizations across the city have another goal for the community. City Hall, the McKinney Independent School District and many non-profits and healthcare organizations are partnering to make McKinney the fittest community in the country.

McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller

Last year, Mayor Brian Loughmiller started the Mayor’s Get Fit Month. Last night at a City Council meeting, Mayor Loughmiller announced the McKinney Health Challenge, a community-wide partnership taking place over a two-month period and featuring eight events.

The 2012 Relay For Life of McKinney begins at 7 p.m. Friday, April 27 at The Ballfields at Craig Ranch.

The McKinney Health Challenge starts with Relay for Life on Friday, April 27 and ends with the Baylor Medical Center at McKinney grand opening celebration on June 30.

The City of McKinney, McKinney Main Street, McKinney ISD, Kiwanis Club of McKinney, American Heart Association and Baylor Medical Center at McKinney are all joining together to promote wellness activities throughout the community.

“We have an active, young population with an engaged business community and many fitness opportunities – all important to furthering the overall goal of a healthy city. The entire city is embracing the health challenge and taking great strides toward a fitter and ultimately healthier McKinney,” said Mayor Loughmiller.

Residents who attend events in the McKinney Health Challenge can enter for a chance to win an iPad. Using a passport available for download on the city website at mckinneytexas.org/getfit, residents can check in at the Baylor Medical Center at McKinney table at each of the eight events. By turning in the passport at the Baylor Medical Center at McKinney Open House on June 30, they are entered in the drawing.

The McKinney Health Challenge also features a new event called Get Fit McKinney, hosted by the city and McKinney ISD. It takes place on Friday, May 4. This fun, free event held at Ron Poe Stadium is open to the entire community and includes activities, games and demonstrations that focus on health and wellness. Mayor Loughmiller will announce the community winners of the Live Healthy Texas 100 Day Challenge – a new fitness challenge started this year.

The 3rd annual closed course "crit" will include interval races, activities, food and drink. The event will draw racers from across the state and beyond as cyclists chase a purse worth over $20,000.

Bike the Bricks, a criterium bike race, will be held for the third year in Historic Downtown on Friday, May 25 hosted by Main Street McKinney. Bike the Bricks is a fast-paced, exciting race for cyclists and spectators.

Another cycling event, the 21st annual Collin Classic, starts and finishes at McKinney North High School on Saturday, June 9.

Other events in the McKinney Health Challenge include the Historic McKinney Kiwanis Triathlon on May 6 and the Kids Triathlon on May 5. On June 23, the American Heart Association presents the first Heart Chase in McKinney, also held in Historic Downtown.

Baylor Health Care System was just named the Healthiest Employer in North Texas by the Dallas Business Journal for the second year. Baylor Medical Center at McKinney will host an open house on June 30 to wrap up the McKinney Health Challenge.
