Together We Serve: McKinney kicks off Cities of Service initiative

Habitat for Humanity Builder Blitz wall-raising ceremony set for Saturday, April 28

(McKinney) April 25, 2012 – McKinney joins the national Cities of Service initiative with a collaborative housing initiative. Cities of Service is a coalition of mayors who have committed to work together to engage citizens to address pressing city needs through impact volunteerism.

On Saturday, April 28, North Collin County Habitat for Humanity will hold a wall raising ceremony at 10 a.m. at 313 Carver St. The event also marks the kick-off the City of McKinney’s Cities of Service program, called Together We Serve, McKinney.

Cities of Service was started by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg in September 2009 and has been followed by 100 other member cities. The national program, which McKinney joined in 2010, enlists communities to identify areas of need and formulate a service plan focused on increased volunteerism to meet those local needs.

McKinney received a grant from OneStar Foundation to provide consulting support for the development of a high impact service plan. Meetings were held with a group of key community leaders who identified three challenges for McKinney: education, transportation and housing. The Together We Serve, McKinney program is addressing housing first, joining together public and private entities, and many volunteers to build houses for seven deserving families through Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers will also complete minor home repair projects throughout the community.

“One of the most enduring qualities that we have as a community is the willingness of our citizens to step up when called upon to volunteer their time and talents here in McKinney. Many organizations already benefit from a tremendous support group right here in our city. Together We Serve builds on that network and formerly brings many resources together so we can make an even bigger impact,” said Mayor Brian Loughmiller.

Seven homes will be built from framing to finish during the week-long Blitz Build from June 4-8, in addition to other housing and neighborhood revitalization projects. Some construction starts early in May, and the project culminates with a Blitz Build dedication ceremony on June 9. Home Builders Blitz 2012 is a partnership between Habitat for Humanity affiliates nationwide and the local building community.
