Mayor Loughmiller to announce winners of Live Healthy Texas 100 Day Challenge

(McKinney) May 3, 2012 – McKinney has a goal to become the healthiest community in the country. A new event called Get Fit McKinney, hosted by the city and McKinney ISD, takes another step toward reaching that goal.

Get Fit McKinney is a fun, free event that will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 4 at Ron Poe Stadium. It is open to the entire community and includes activities, games and demonstrations that focus on health and wellness.

Get Fit McKinney features the Kiwanis Family Fun Walk, 11 bounce houses and obstacle courses, a rock climbing wall, a dunk tank featuring principals, 33 health and wellness vendors from across the community and performances on stage by various school and community groups.

McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller

At 7 p.m., Mayor Brian Loughmiller will announce the community winners of the Live Healthy Texas 100 Day Challenge – a new fitness challenge started this year. The Live Healthy Texas 100 Day Challenge provides an online platform for residents to form teams and track physical activity, weight loss, or both from Jan. 23 through May 1. City of McKinney employees participated in the program this year for the fourth year in a row. In 2010, city employees won an award as the Healthiest City in North Texas.

“McKinney has a strong community spirit. The collaboration between the school district, the city and many other organizations all in the name of a healthier McKinney exemplifies this spirit,” said Mayor Brian Loughmiller.

Mayor Loughmiller has long been a proponent of health initiatives, starting the Mayor’s Get Fit Month in May of last year. McKinney residents logged more than 750 hours of activity during May 2011, and many took advantage of the free month-long membership offered at Cooper Fitness Center in Craig Ranch. Cooper Fitness Center is once again offering this opportunity for residents to get more active and healthy during the month of May by trying the center for free. Visit the Cooper Fitness Center at 7910 Collin McKinney Pkwy. or call 214- 383-1000 for more information.

The Get Fit McKinney event is part of the McKinney Health Challenge, a community-wide partnership taking place over a two-month period and featuring eight events. The McKinney Health Challenge started with Relay for Life on April 27 and ends with the Baylor Medical Center at McKinney grand opening celebration on June 30.

Residents who attend events in the McKinney Health Challenge can enter for a chance to win an iPad. Using a passport available for download on the city website at www.mckinneytexas.org/getfit, residents can check in at the Baylor Medical Center at McKinney table at each of the eight events. By turning in the passport at the Baylor Medical Center at McKinney Open House on June 30, they are entered in the drawing.
