Garland ISD schools named finalists for national recognition

(Garland ISD) September 29, 2012 – Singled out as some of the highest performing schools in the state, Kimberlin Academy for Excellence, Rowlett Elementary, and Walnut Glen Academy for Excellence were named finalists in the National Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program. The three campuses are among only seven in Texas to receive this distinction, while Walnut Glen is a two-time honoree after being named a finalist in 2011-12.

“Last year, it was a tremendous honor to have been nominated,” said WGA Principal Alex Rivera. “This year being the second year, means that despite all of the changes going on at the state level, district level and campus level, my teachers are doing awesome things for students. It fills us with pride to know that what we are doing consistently every day is being noticed.”

The National Title I Distinguished Schools Program recognizes academically outstanding campuses that serve more than 40-percent low-income students. To qualify, schools must maintain an accountability rating of Exemplary or Recognized for two-or-more consecutive years.

“Being a Title I school is about ensuring that we have a rigorous and effective curriculum that helps us close learning gaps,” explained Kimberlin Principal Mida Milligan. “We also strive to provide multiple learning opportunities for all our children and partner with parents and the community to offer the best education possible for every student. While we are always working to strengthen and grow in these areas, this distinction provides us with encouraging feedback on our progress.”

As National Distinguished Schools finalists, GISD’s campuses must now prepare a presentation–which details learning opportunities, achievement data, and professional development—to deliver to a panel from the Texas Education Agency via Skype. A representative from a local education service center will also visit each campus. Two winners from each state will be chosen from the finalists and announced later this fall. They will then be recognized at the National Title I Conference in spring 2013.

Garland’s Beaver Technology Center for Math and Science was one of Texas’ two winners in 2011-12. Continuing the tradition of excellence, it is believed to be the first time that three finalists hail from the same district. Rowlett Principal Lisa Alexander credits GISD’s vision statement, “Diverse Community. Shared Vision. Exceptional Education.”

“Our staff puts forth outstanding effort to benefit all children, and this award means that perseverance and hard work pay off. From our custodial staff, to office staff, to instructional staff, everyone plays an integral part in ensuring our Bobcats learn at equally high rates.”
