(Garland ISD – November 12, 2012) While most school districts use attendance zones to determine a student’s campus, Garland ISD allows its parents to decide. The 30-day “Choice of School” election period for elementary families begins March 1. Parents can learn about available options by visiting the first-ever GISD Magnet Fair on Dec. 1 at the Curtis Culwell Center.
With 47 elementary campuses, many offer gifted and talented programs, dual language programs, classical studies, and math, science, and technology focuses. The fair will give parents an opportunity to learn about all of the available magnet options, the entrance criteria, and the application process.
“In previous years, we held the magnet meeting on a school night,” explained Brie Smith, special programs facilitator at Garland ISD. “We realize that our families are very busy, and we wanted to be able to showcase each campus. This event will give attendees an opportunity to meet magnet program principals.”
All current and prospective GISD families are invited to the come-and-go event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A video—offered in both English and Spanish—will introduce parents to the magnet programs, and each campus will hold several presentations. Information will also be available at booths, along with students, teachers, and principals from every magnet school. Employees from Students Services will be on site to answer any “Choice of School” questions. And, computers will be available for anyone wishing to start the online application process early.
“With the growth of the magnet programs, we feel it’s important to reach out to our families so they know their options early on,” said Smith. “Creating a community event also reaches families that have not yet entered the school setting.”
