(ROCKWALL-March 14, 2013) February has come and gone, but I wanted to share with you what a big fan I am of the second month of the year. How can you not love a month that has a holiday devoted to love?! But Valentine’s Day isn’t the only reason I’m partial to February. It’s when we put our focus on heart health for women – a subject very close to my heart.
My mom had heart disease. She died after suffering a massive heart attack at the age of 49. I urge both men and women to take action today to protect yourself from heart disease – it can happen to you. I have not been diagnosed with heart disease, but I do have some risk factors: high cholesterol and a family history of heart disease. I know the dangers and so should you – and that includes women.
This time of year serves as a wake-up call to highlight a woman’s risk of heart disease and to remind women not to make the mistake of thinking heart disease is a man’s disease. We are all candidates for heart disease. It is the #1 killer of men and women in our country.
Now, let’s talk about our great city. It’s great news that so many things are going right in Rockwall. That’s a good way to start a New Year. If you missed our annual Daddy/Daughter Dance, you missed a good time. Beautiful little girls with proud fathers or grandfathers filled the dance floor at the Hilton Dallas Rockwall Lakefront. Since 1999, when 50 people came to the first dance to this year with 750, it has been a sell-out.
Don’t forget the city’s annual Easter Egg Hunt March 23 at Myers Park. Again, the site of excited, happy kids will fill your hearts. In other areas of our city, one of the more exciting things happening right now is the upswing in economic development. The Tech Park is doing great, and our figures show commercial development is on the rise.
