Rockwall YMCA readies for $5 million expansion project
With more than 12,000 sq. ft. being added to the facility, the JER Chilton YMCA will sport a new look and serve as a premier center for family fitness in Rockwall.

(Rockwall) August 28, 2013 – Phase one of a nearly $5 million master plan is taking shape at the JER Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, thanks to a generous donation by local businessman JER “Bob” Chilton, and the ongoing support of donors to the Capital Campaign.

“It’s an exciting time for members, our staff and the community,” said Bonnie LaVielle, Executive Director of the JER Chilton YMCA. “We’re finalizing floor plans now for an additional 12,000 sq. ft. of space. Our workout room will transform into a first-class fitness facility that spans nearly 6,000 sq. ft. – complete with state-of-the-art weight and cardio equipment. We’ll add spacious showers and locker rooms, and a large child watch room. The workout center alone is going to be a huge benefit to our members.”

Plans also include updating the pool area and installing a new, wood floor in the gymnasium. TheWelcomeCenterwill be expanded and the Y will sport an entirely new front elevation. The groundbreaking is expected to take place in the fourth quarter of this year.

The JER Chilton YMCA at Rockwall will transform its workout area into a state-of-the-art fitness facility that spans nearly 6,000 sq. ft.

Larry Parks, Senior VP at American National Bank of Texas, YMCA board member and head of the Y’s Leadership Development Committee, is leading the Capital Campaign, to ensure the success of the project.

“Our Y board is 100% invested, with a lead gift of $100,000 from one of our board members,” said Parks. “Rusty Wallis, a longtime supporter of the Y, has also donated $100,000. Our Wellness Studio will be named in his honor. We want to thank area business leaders and the community as a whole for such overwhelming support.”

Wallis, owner of Rusty Wallis Volkswagen and Rusty Wallis Honda said, “The YMCA is a place for families to build strong bonds and relationships; that’s something my family believes in. It’s a great opportunity to support the Y in its mission and give back to the great community of Rockwall. That’s what it’s all about.”

Renovations will be completed in phases, so the Y can continue providing services to its members with little disruption.

“There’s never been a better time to join the Y,” said LaVielle. “We’re poised to become the premier center for family fitness in Rockwall.” She added that with time and money at a premium, and an increasing number of families trying to do more with fewer resources, Y membership just makes sense. Y programs seek to strengthen family ties, instill core values and provide families with worry-free fun.

“Rockwall has always been blessed to have such an active and involved Y,” said Mayor David Sweet. “The Y provides opportunities that empower our community, nurture our youth, give back and support our neighbors. This expansion project will put the JER Chilton Y in a position to better serve Rockwall as we grow.”

Visit the Y at 1210 N. Goliad St. or call 972-772-9622.
