Local nurse named finalist for Excellence Award

(Rowlett) August 19, 2013 – Jackie Cox, emergency services director at Lake Pointe Medical Center, based in Rowlett, was recently named a 2013 South Region Nursing Excellence regional finalist by Nurse.com. Cox is a finalist in the staff/patient management category, one of six categories for the award.

The Nursing Excellence Awards honor superior nurses in regions across the country, leading to the selection of the National Nurses of the Year. These particular awards are unique because recipients are nominated and selected by other nurses in the field. The award for patient/staff management is given to a registered nurse (RN) who makes significant contributions to the management, supervision or direction of the environment of care and the performance of staff, demonstrating an ability to lead, influence and improve outcomes of care in any inpatient or outpatient setting. Each region selects 30 nurses, and one nurse from each category is chosen to be considered for the National Nursing Excellence Award.

“Jackie is an inspiration to everyone whom she comes in contact with. Her willingness to jump into the line of fire and work alongside her staff to lend a helping hand and heart has made her an invaluable member of our clinical staff,” said Brett Lee, LPMC’s chief executive officer. “She stays directly involved in the community by visiting local fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) departments, attending community leadership activities and continuously seeking opportunities to educate those around her. LPMC is proud to congratulate Jackie Cox for being a finalist for the 2013 Nurses Excellence Award.”

Originally serving as an emergency department night staff nurse, Cox became the director of emergency services four years ago, a position that had approximately 35 employees and only a main campus at the time. Now, the same position staffs approximately 115 employees in a main campus department, an urgent care center and two free-standing, fully functioning emergency departments.

Cox has supported her staff and continually encourages LPMC employees to reach their highest potential. Under her guidance, the department has earned a five-star status from the Patient Satisfaction Measurement System (PSMS) for the last four years and has seen little to no staff turnover, which can be attributed to her motto for all staff that “family comes first.” The facility also received a J.D. Power award and accreditation from the Joint Commission for being graded a hospital with no deficiencies.

“Nurse.com’s nursing excellence program has been a vital part of our company mission for nearly two decades and has become the largest and most unique of its kind in the nation,” said Debbie Moeller, LPMC’s chief operating officer. “No matter what is going on at work or in her personal life, Cox always has a smile on her face and greets you by name.”

In 2008, Nurse.com created this program to recognize the extraordinary contributions nurses make to their patients, each other and the profession. The nominations are divided into six categories of focus which include: advancing and leading the profession, clinical nursing, inpatient, home, community and ambulatory care, staff/patient management, education and mentorship, and volunteerism and service.
