(ROCKWALL COUNTY – October 30, 2013) This year, the Rockwall County Library’s Reading for Adults program has held 1,538 class meetings and impacted the lives of 655 students, thanks to efforts of 79 volunteers donating an amazing 7,833 3/4 hours.

A Tutor Appreciation Event was held October 28 at the library, where volunteers were recognized for their many hours of service. Guests were treated to delicious appetizers and beverages while being entertained by Inspire, a trio that performs regularly at First United Methodist Church Rockwall.

Marcine McCulley and Carol Cease present the awards.

In 2013, RFA volunteers helped three students acquire U.S. citizenship. Thirty-seven students were able to obtain their GED, four were accepted to college and 150 advanced a level in their ESL class.

Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to volunteer tutors by Carol Cease, Literacy Program Coordinator, and Marcine McCulley, Library Director. Also in attendance were Sharon Bowman, Reading for Adults Advisory Board, ESL Tutor, RFA Data Records; Jamie Rubush, RFA Advisory Board and ESL tutor; Becky Cecil, Corresponding Secretary, Friends of the Rockwall County Library; and Jane Buie, VP of Membership.

The Reading for Adults Literacy Program offers FREE educational classes for Rockwall County residents including:
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)

RFA has convenient class schedules, including weekday mornings and select evening classes. Tutors are local volunteers (experience is not a requirement – free training is provided) and there is no fee for the program classes. There is a small fee for books.
