(October 14, 2013) Nathan Alvey raised more than $2,700 online at beatchildhoodcancer.myevent.com for the fight against childhood cancer in the month of September. Caitlyn Coker raised another $600 online. People sent the 11 year old classmates an additional $1,000 in checks. Then, they helped the TeamConnor Childhood Cancer Awareness Concert & Prayer Vigil at Watters Creek in Allen raise another $1,000. In total, they exceeded their goal of raising $5,000 for September’s National Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

“Most people think I’m too little to raise that much money, but really, you’re not,” Nathan said during a recent television interview. “All you have to do is just get people to start raising the money, get the word out there, and people will start donating.”

The 11 year old Murphy residents serve on the Junior Advisory Board for the Team Connor Childhood Cancer Foundation.

A Dallas man (who prefers to remain anonymous) heard Nathan speak about childhood cancer in a recent radio interview. He was shocked that only 3% of the Federal Government’s total funding for cancer research is dedicated to childhood cancer research, despite the fact that cancer is the #1 disease killer of children under the age of 15 in the U.S. He was also amazed at how passionate and eloquent the 11-year-olds were about childhood cancer. So the man went to the Concert & Prayer Vigil September 21 to meet Nathan and Caitlyn in person. After verifying they were the real deal, he asked Carolyn Alvey, who serves on the TeamConnor board of directors, to contact him with the total amount raised. In addition, he wanted to know how much Nathan and Caitlyn had raised over the past three years, including the Coins for Kids with Cancer program they championed at Miller Elementary School where the two are fifth graders. It turns out, they raised more than $12,000 over the past three years.

Sunday, October 13, the man arranged to meet Nathan and Caitlyn at a Plano fast food restaurant. In honor of their efforts, he presented them with a check made out to the TeamConnor Childhood Cancer Foundation for $12,200… doubling the amount they raised over the past three years.

Connor the Caterpillar is the national icon for childhood cancer awareness.

Caitlyn and Nathan know they can make a difference. And they challenge others to join the fight! Together we can make the scourge of cancer a distant memory like polio and small pox. Check out TeamConnor.org or facebook.com/TeamConnor
