ROCKWALL (January 29, 2014) As we embrace the new year we also begin thinking ahead to what the future holds. For most of us our thoughts turn to making this year better than the previous one. We resolve to improve ourselves and our lives in some way. According to most studies, only a small percentage of our New Year’s resolutions are actually successful. In fact, the success rate is as low as only 8%! Perhaps when we think ahead we should consider what we could do differently so that we can finally be successful.
Consider that most popular resolution to lose weight. Are you one of the millions of Americans who have made this resolution, again? You are not alone. The year usually starts out well enough. We are exercising and eating better. Then life reverts to our normal business and we fall into our same old patterns. It doesn’t take long for any better habits we developed to become memories.
Maybe the solution to success this year is help.
Too often we “go it alone” in our resolutions. Maybe we talk about eating better with our spouse or tell a friend that we can “work out together.” But nothing seems to stick. We are bored, unmotivated, self-conscious or become frustrated with a lack of quick results.
With losing weight you know you need to exercise and eat healthier. If you can afford to join a gym and have a personal training session then seize that opportunity! Trainers are great motivators! Take a series of sessions and include periodic follow-ups to stay on track. Or form a group of exercise partners. That way if one person can’t make it there are still several people who can encourage each other to stay motivated.
When it comes to eating healthier, focus on nutrition because nutrition matters! Nutrition includes many different elements including individual needs, caloric intake, life-style balance, etc. There is a lot of information out there about what to eat, when to eat, how to eat and a lot of it is conflicting in the details. So it would make sense that we would become frustrated or confused about whether we are doing the right thing. Where do you find help with that?
A registered dietitian is a great source for getting you started or even helping you over a plateau. They can help develop a plan that fits YOUR lifestyle (rather than one-size-fits-all) and can provide you all the encouragement to keep pursuing your goals. Appointments can be surprisingly affordable and in many instances may be covered by insurance to help you manage or improve a medical condition.
Resolve to be successful in your resolutions! This year find help – and make 2014 the year that changes your future!
