Rockwall firefighters deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors

ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (March 20, 2014) Rockwall firefighters helped deliver meals to homebound seniors today as part of Meals on Wheels Senior Services’ National Community Champion Day and the March for Meals campaign.

Firefighters arrived in their emergency vehicles, and presented the seniors with handshakes, hugs and a nutritious meal.

“In this tough economy, the food and human contact we provide to seniors in this community is needed more than ever,” said Margie VerHagen, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Senior Services.

The Meals on Wheels Senior Services’ March for Meals event also included a Strike Out Senior Hunger at Shenaniganz.

March for Meals is a national campaign held during the month of March, initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities. Hundreds of Senior Nutrition Programs across theUnited States, like Meals on Wheels Senior Services, promote March for Meals through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives.

“Our Meals On Wheels programs are on the front lines every day in the battle against senior hunger,” said Meals On Wheels Association of American President and CEO Ellie Hollander. “March for Meals is a time when communities can come together to stand with their local Meals On Wheels program and support our mission to end senior hunger inAmerica.”
