ROCKWALL ISD, TX (March 31, 2014) Nineteen teachers—one representing each campus–have been chosen by their peers as the Rockwall Independent School District’s Campus Teachers of the Year. From these 19 teachers, RISD will select one Elementary and one Secondary Teacher of the Year to represent the district at the regional level.
The Teacher of the Year program is overseen by the Texas Association of School Administrators and involves a campus, district, regional, state and national level competition. In 2012, after being named the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year, Rockwall High School culinary arts teacher Cody Hayes was selected as the Region 10 Secondary Teacher of the Year and subsequently named as a state finalist. In 2013, after being named the district’s Elementary Teacher of the Year, Pullen Elementary social studies teacher Julie Woodard was selected as the Region 10 Elementary Teacher of the Year and subsequently named as a state finalist.
On a local level, the Teacher of the Year program is a partnership between the district and several entities including the Breakfast Rotary Club which has championed the Teacher of the Year program and been the primary partner for well over a decade. Recent Teacher of the Year partners include Toyota of Rockwall who awards the district level winners with a lease on a Toyota Prius and the RISD Education Foundation who provides awards for each campus Teacher of the Year and provides monetary support for the Teacher of the Year Celebration.
This year’s Teacher of the Year Celebration will take place on Friday, May 9, at the Hilton Dallas Rockwall Lakefront. Each Campus Teacher of the Year will be honored and the District Elementary Teacher of the Year and Secondary Teacher of the Year will be announced. Underwriters for this event include Pogue Construction; SHW Architects; SSC Service Solutions; PBK Architects; Durham School Services; Abernathy, Roeder, Boyd & Joplin; Linebarger, Goggan, Blair & Sampson; and Horace Mann Insurance.
