Rockwall County Helping Hands gears up for School Supplies Drive

ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (May 31, 2014) While the temperatures climb and we head into the lazy days of summer, Rockwall County Helping Hands is busy making plans to help kids in struggling families get a good start into the new school year.

Beginning June 1, Rockwall County Helping Hands and its Community Circle are undertaking a task to raise money and gather school supplies to help more than 1,200 students in Rockwall and Royse City schools have a successful school year.  Students eligible to receive supplies come from low-income families and often from families that have suffered loss of employment or extreme medical issues.  According to Assistance and Referral Director, Sherry Hamm, “Every day we serve families living in poverty.  Supplies are expensive, and Helping Hands serves many families that will have to give up food or leave a utility bill unpaid in order to provide supplies for their children.  Thanks to AMICA’s $3000 donation, the school supply campaign is off to a great start!”

Helping Hands staff member Candace Coleman reports, “We know we will have over 1,200 kids needing supplies, and we want to provide each child with as many of the required supplies as we possibly can.  We have an avenue for purchasing discounted supplies so monetary donations will be most helpful at this time.  We hope to be able to spend at least $20 per child.  Donations of any amount will be beneficial, and receiving donations in June will be extremely helpful as our distribution date is set for August 2.”

Here’s how you can help Rockwall county kids get a good start into the new school year:

• Make a monetary donation at rockwallhelpinghands.com

• Purchase supplies and donate them to Helping Hands for distribution to kids in need

“This campaign is a quick and easy way to make a difference in the life of a child by providing tools and resources needed to be successful in school,” said Community Circle member, Beth Williams.

Education is critical, and educating young people is one of the most effective avenues for breaking the cycle of poverty.  Helping kids get a good start into a new school year is definitely one way to set the pace for a great year in our local schools and in the lives of Rockwall County children!

THANKS TO AMICA FOR KICKING OFF THE SCHOOL SUPPLY CAMPAIGN WITH A GENEROUS $3000 DONATION!
