Rockwall Councilmember Scott Milder seeking second term for Place 5

ROCKWALL, TX (Jan. 12, 2014) Rockwall City Councilmember Scott Milder recently announced his intent to run for a second term in the May 2015 election. He was first elected in May 2013.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of serving the people of Rockwall,” Milder said. “This is a fantastic city for anyone to call home, which is my motivation for serving on Council. My desire to serve is driven simply by my desire to preserve and strengthen the quality of life and place Rockwall has become for all of us.”

In his first term Milder insisted that Rockwall continue to transition from a volunteer fire department to fully funded fire protection, resulting in the addition of 8 new full-time firefighter positions. He discovered that e-cigarette vapor shops were legally selling their products to minors and led the Council to adopt an ordinance prohibiting those sales. Milder played a key role in the Council’s authorization to build a barrier-free playground to allow wheelchair-bound residents to engage in play with their children. He has also argued against numerous low-quality development projects.

“One of my biggest concerns for our City is that we exercise caution in the area of development,” he said. “We need to continue demanding high standards and have the courage to say no when developers propose anything less.

“I believe strongly in the conservative principles of limited government and careful expenditure of tax dollars, but not at the expense of appropriate investment in our City services and infrastructure,” Milder said. “Jumping over dollars to save dimes is a foolish philosophy. We are growing and we need to be sure city services are keeping appropriate pace with that growth.

“We have accomplished a lot in the very short time that I’ve been on Council,” Milder said. “One of the things I’m most proud of is my involvement in breathing new life into the youth baseball and softball program. In its first year we saw participation double, from 827 to 1,625 players. We also expanded our Leon Tuttle Athletic Complex, adding new fields, rebuilding existing fields, and freshening up the entire complex.”

Scott and his wife Leslie, married 17 years, moved to Rockwall in 2001. The Milders are small local business owners, currently restoring the old Long family house at 803 North Goliad where they will open a new business this spring. Scott is also employed by Stantec Architecture, a firm specializing in the design of K-12 school and university buildings, where he serves as an elections strategist for the firm’s clients. Milder earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and master’s degree in public relations from the University of North Texas in Denton.

Scott and Leslie are the proud parents of Thomas, a freshman at Rockwall High School, Grace, an 8th grader at Williams Middle School, and Mandy, a 4th grader at Grace Hartman Elementary. The Milders are members of Lake Point Church.
