ROCKWALL, TX (Jan. 29, 2015) Rockwall Mayor Jim Pruitt has filed to retain his mayoral seat in the May city elections.
Pruitt, 58, has served on the Rockwall City Council since 2012 and was elected by his fellow council members as mayor pro tem in May of 2014. When former mayor David Sweet vacated the seat to assume his newly elected position of Rockwall County Judge in December, Pruitt was sworn in as the new mayor.
“I was honored that my colleagues unanimously elected me to be mayor pro tem in May knowing that I would move into the mayor’s seat in December,” said Pruitt. “I have really appreciated their confidence that I would do a good job as mayor of this great city.”
A fiscal conservative, Pruitt declared that officials must concentrate on fiscal responsibility that focuses on the growth in expenditures stating that increased expenditures should be no greater than the rate of inflation plus the increase in population.
“I am proud that I was part of the council that decreased the tax rate paid by our citizens this past year,” he stated. “I assure you that I will work hard to continue this conservative trend.”
Pruitt has been very active in city issues for a number of years and now serves on the Rockwall Emergency Services Corporation, the Rockwall County Road Consortium, and the Rockwall Airport Board.
Since being sworn in as mayor, Pruitt has been proactively reaching out to the public. He has instituted official office hours to meet with citizens one on one and has attended numerous community events and meetings.
“It is important that citizens know that they have a voice in their government,” he said.
He has additionally spent time outlining his specific vision for the future which includes increasing the size and quality of new homes; continuing to focus on improving roads and transportation; emphasizing parks and recreation programs; and encouraging more residents to get involved in city volunteer opportunities.
Pruitt practices family law and mediation in a renovated office building that dates back to the early 1900’s just off the downtown square.He is married to Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper, has four children, and is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rockwall.
“I am so proud to be the mayor of this great city,” he said.“I hope the citizens will do me the honor of allowing me to continue serving in a position that I love.”
