ROCKWALL/HEATH, TX (March 1, 2015) A FREE Girls Lacrosse Clinic, open to girls of all ages, is being offered at Cain Middle School, 6620 FM 549, through the end of April. Those interested in learning the skills, drills and rules of Girls Lacrosse are encouraged to attend from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sundays.
Known as the “fastest game on two feet,” Lacrosse is a traditional Native American game which was first witnessed by Europeans when French Jesuit missionaries came to America in the 1630’s. Lacrosse games were often major events, lasting several days and involving 100 to 1,000 villagers. The first modern Girls Lacrosse game was played in the late 1800’s in Scotland. Today, there are more than 138,000 youth players nationwide – 120,000-plus high school players and 14,000-plus college players. And those are just the Girls’ statistics! Girls Lacrosse is recognized as the fastest growing sport in the nation (36% in the last five years), and the fastest growing sport in Texas!
‘It is a very dynamic and fast-paced game that is easy to learn and challenging to play,” clinic organizers said. “We are currently coaching a team of 3rd to 8th grade players and a small high school team. Most of the younger girls have never picked up a stick, but catch on very fast. The older girls help to demonstrate the game and share their knowledge and experience. It’s a great time!”
Some loaner equipment is available. For those purchasing their own equipment, organizers point out that one of the best things about Girls Lacrosse is that the equipment will usually last a player her whole youth career. Beginner sticks are about $40 and face masks start at $45.
“The Rockwall/Heath Boys Lacrosse coaches, players and parents have worked very hard to build winning teams. We are hoping to draw from their lessons learned and dedication to the sport, and build a competitive Girls Lacrosse team here as well,” organizers said. “This Spring, the boys registered 130 boys from 1st grade through Varsity. With a new head coach, Tim LaBelle, for the varsity team, they are expected to compete at the highest level of lacrosse in the DFW area. They have grown successful and competitive teams for all grades and we hope to do the same. So come out and experience this exciting time in Girls Rockwall/Heath Lacrosse! You will love it!”
