Angie Smith named Rowlett’s Deputy City Manager
ROWLETT, TX – Nov. 2, 2020 – After a nationwide search, City Manager Brian Funderburk has named Angie Smith Deputy City Manager for the City of Rowlett. In this role, Ms. Smith will act as the number two official in city administration and will have executive oversight of the Public Works and Utilities, Parks and Recreation, Library, Information Technology, and Human Resources Departments.
“Angie is an excellent addition to the City Manager’s Office team,” says City Manager Brian Funderburk. “She brings a unique combination of proven leadership skills, education, organizational knowledge and outstanding performance as a department head, all of which enable her to provide the strategic leadership necessary to serve the Rowlett community well.”
Smith has served as the Interim Assistant City Manager since August 10, 2020. During this time, she has taken on increasingly responsible roles regarding the City’s pandemic response to COVID-19, the City’s Strategic Plan, facilities development and working with various departments and the Community Investment Advisory Board in preparation for a 2021 bond election.
A seasoned municipal government professional, Angie has been with the City of Rowlett since 2011, serving as the Director of Parks and Recreation since 2016. She successfully led the department through the re-accreditation process from the Commission for Accreditation of Parks & Recreation and serves as the Region 7 representative on the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Executive Board. Angie has been instrumental in the department obtaining both regional and state recognition through its production of award-winning programs and services, and for the City’s selection for a sixth year as a Playful City USA. Since 2013, the City of Rowlett Parks and Recreation Department has won nine awards from Texas Public Pool Council, Texas Amateur Athletic Federation, North Region Texas Recreation and Parks Society and Texas Recreation and Parks Society State. Awards include Administrative/Management Award, Agency of the Year Award, Program Excellence Awards, Special Event of the Year, Readers’ Choice Awards, Tree City USA designation (15 years in a row) and an Excellence in Programming award for the Honor Academy Program.
Angie holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Texas-Tyler and is currently working on her PhD in Business Administration with a specialization in Organizational Leadership.
