Rockwall authors look to start new family tradition this Christmas with picture book

ROCKWALL, TX – November 28, 2020 – If you’re looking to start a new Christmas family tradition in this very untraditional year, you might consider making the best birthday cake in the history of ever to celebrate the real reason for the season.

Local residents Jennifer Hill and Mary Walker have co-authored a picture book, titled The Best Birthday Cake in the History of Ever!, that’s filled with tons of fun Christmas activities, games and a unique cake-baking experience to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The story is told through fun rhymes and playful illustrations drawn by talented local artist Kenzie Stringo.

“Christmas is meant to be more than presents and Santa,” Jennifer said. “It’s about the celebration of the birth of Jesus and this year especially, we could all use a reminder of who Jesus is.”

The Best Birthday Cake in the History of Ever! revolves around a family looking to center their Christmas celebration around Jesus. One night, young Hayes prays to God for guidance on how he can help bring a new tradition for his family to life, and God answers. The next morning, he tells his family that they’re going to throw a birthday party for Jesus! They send out invites to friends, and Hayes, his brother and his mom create a cake recipe that’s tied to scripture. On Christmas Day, the friends all gather to make the cake and participate in all kinds of fun crafts and activities to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

The story is based on the longstanding Hill family tradition of putting on a birthday celebration for Jesus on Christmas. Sensing a need for helping children better understand the true meaning of Christmas, the two Texas moms and close friends drew on that tradition as inspiration for the story.

“Every year the tradition evolved,” Jennifer said. “We would add more pieces and different things I would find, or somebody would come up with a new idea for Christmas and what they did would tie to scripture.  It just built on itself over a period of 15 years.”

So how do all the parts of the cake represent scripture? Jennifer and Mary say that’s a surprise, but did provide an example of a way in which one ingredient ties in with scripture.

“The chocolate chips represent our sins, and the batter represents Jesus’s love,” Mary said. “When you mix them together, the batter melts the chocolate chips, symbolizing Jesus’s love melting away our sins. So it’s a visual way for kids to understand how Jesus’s love is good for us in this way.”

The scriptures referenced in the story can be found on the back of the book, along with a certificate of cake completion kids can fill out. The book also includes several fun holiday activities and games for party attendees. “As we head into the holiday season, we want to help bring Jesus back in what’s been a crazy year,” Mary said. “This is also a great opportunity to start a new tradition in what may be an untraditional Christmas.”
