ROCKWALL, TX – Jan. 27, 2021 — The Rockwall County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to approve a resolution requesting the Texas Senate and Texas House of Representatives to consider approval of renaming the portion of State Highway 66 extending through the county as the David Magness Highway.

The resolution, which the court requested be considered by the Senate and House of Representatives during the 87th Legislative Session, honors the late Rockwall County Commissioner Pct. 4 David Magness who passed away in December last year.

Magness dedicated numerous decades of his life to serving the communities of the county. He was committed to planning and building strong communities, advancing transportation projects for improved mobility and safety, promoting quality economic development, maintaining a low tax rate and providing excellent county services to all citizens in Rockwall County.

Rockwall County Transportation Consultant John Polster said if approved, the new designation would not affect the portions of SH 66 known locally by different designations, such as Williams Street. “This is essentially an overlay that allows the cities in the county to sign off on it if they choose, and then it will be known on the state highway system as the David Magness Highway,” he said. “But it will not impact local address names.”

“Very soon after Commissioner Magness passed, there were lots conversations in terms of being able to identify that special project to recognize him,” said Rockwall County Judge David Sweet. “I had several folks reaching out to me, and it made sense we would want to be able to honor him. John and Lisa Polster have done a really great job of going back and finding out that this request to designate the highway was even an option.”

“John and Lisa had worked very long and very hard hours with David, and when they received word of his passing, they were just devastated,” said Commissioner Cliff Sevier. “They stepped up to do this out of the kindness of their hearts for David, and found out a way we could do this to honor his legend and his legacy as far as transportation. I am very appreciative of what John and Lisa have done for David and his family. They are just amazing people.”
