Self family and Rockwall ISD Education Foundation award trades scholarships to local grads

ROCKWALL, TX (June 24, 2021) The inaugural Scott Self Memorial Scholarship was recently awarded to Hannah Gonzales from Rockwall High School and Luke Rothbauer from Rockwall-Heath High School.

The scholarship is designated for local graduates who are pursuing a career in the trades. Hannah is pursuing an esthetician license at the Aveda Institute-Dallas. Luke will study welding technology at Texas State Technical College-Waco. Each recipient received a $2,500 scholarship.

The namesake of this gift was a man who often said “sometimes life is just all about showing up.” Scott Self undoubtedly showed up through his numerous roles in our community and serving others. The accomplishments he experienced as a businessman, outdoorsman and competitive sailor are abundant. He loved being able to share the joys of sailing, particularly aboard the Seawolf, the catamaran he custom built. He helped establish the Rockwall ISD Education Foundation and served on the board for several years.

The two recipients of this inaugural scholarship have demonstrated their determination and dedication by showing up in the classroom, in our community and in their preparation for becoming a skilled tradesperson. The Scott Self Memorial Scholarship is intended to recognize and celebrate the students who share Scott’s philosophy that hard work is a key to success.

The scholarship was made possible by the Self family (Jan, Billy and Chandler) along with the 2020 REF Board of Directors. To help sustain this gift for future RISD graduates, please consider donating to the Scott Self Memorial Scholarship fund. Visit rockwallisd.com/EdFoundation for more information.
