Rockwall ISD Board Meeting Highlights: recognitions, new head football coach, May 7 general election and more

ROCKWALL, TX (Jan. 19, 2022) The following is a Rockwall ISD press release summarizing last night’s RISD Board of Trustees meeting.

Board of Trustees Recognitions

The Board of Trustees recognized outstanding individuals and groups for the following accomplishments:

Horacio Arenas (2nd time All-State), Noella Barron, Lorien Britt, Alejandro Martinez, Alfonso Martinez, and Allyson Verret for earning a position in one of the All-State Bands and Nino de la Torre for earning a position in one of the All-State Choirs.

Rockwall Breakfast Rotary Club and their 14th year of providing brand new winter coats to Rockwall ISD elementary school students in need. Approximately 350 pre-qualified elementary school students selected their own brand new winter coat. In all, Breakfast Rotary has donated more than 3,000 coats to Rockwall ISD elementary students.

Chick-fil-A collaborated with the Rockwall ISD Student Services Department and began a coat drive for secondary students. More than 500 Rockwall ISD secondary students received coats during the last six years.

January is School Board Appreciation Month in Texas public schools. Trustees are responsible for a total annual budget of $201 million, 1,980 employees, 23 campuses and, most importantly, 18,000 students. Thank you to our Trustees: Jon Bailey, Linda Mitchell Duran, Stephanie Adams, Frank Conselman, Amy Hilton, Sherry Packer and Jim White.

Public Hearing for the 2020-2021 Texas Accountability Performance Report

District leadership presented the 2020-2021 Texas Accountability Performance Report information as required by the state.

Schematic Design Review and Presentation for the Rockwall-Heath High School Multi-Purpose Tennis Facility Project

District leadership presented information about the proposed schematic design for the Rockwall-Heath High School Multi-Purpose Tennis Facility project.

Approval for Rockwall ISD Bid Package 1-B (Multi-Campus Restroom and Building Renovations) Project Completion

The Board of Trustees approved Bid Package 1-B (Multi-Campus Restroom and Building Renovations) Project Completion.
The project was completed on time and under budget.

Approval for Rockwall ISD Bid Package 1-C (Multi-Campus Restroom and Building Renovations) Project Completion

The Board of Trustees approved Bid Package 1-C (Multi-Campus Restroom and Building Renovations) Project Completion.
The project was completed on time and under budget.

Approval of Competitive Sealed Proposal Contract Award for the Rockwall ISD Aquatics Center Infrastructure Renovations Project

The Board of Trustees approved a contract award to ICI Construction for the Rockwall ISD Aquatics Center Infrastructure Renovations project.

Approval of Resolution Regarding COVID-19 Local Leave Benefit for Employees

The Board of Trustees approved establishing an additional five (5) local paid leave days related to COVID-19 for all full-time employees who test positive and provide a medical certification documenting positive test results. Employees may use the Local COVID-19 Leave before using their accrued leave. The Local COVID-19 Leave is retroactive to January 4, 2022, and shall remain in effect through June 30, 2022.

Harrell Named Rockwall-Heath High School Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator

The Board approved Coach John Harrell as the next Rockwall-Heath High School Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator. Harrell, Assistant Head Coach and Run Game Coordinator, has served as a key member of Rockwall-Heath High School’s highly successful football program since 2019. He also brings experience in coaching successful high school programs in Stephenville, Midlothian, and Garland ISD’s. During his career, Coach Harrell’s athletic experiences include Offensive Coordinator, Head Powerlifting Coach, and Run Game Coordinator.

Approval of the Order of Election for the May 7, 2022 General Election to Elect Trustees in Places 4 and 5

The Board of Trustees approved the Order of Election for the May 7, 2022 General Election to elect Trustees in Places 4
and 5.

Approval of the 2022-2023 School Calendar

The Board of Trustees approved the 2022-2023 School Calendar after receiving feedback from stakeholders. The calendar will be posted to the District website. This calendar includes the following highlights:
• First Day of School August 15, 2022
• Fall Break October 3-7, 2022 (incudes 2 days of Professional Development)
• Student Winter Break December 19, 2022 – January 4, 2023 (Staff returns January 3)
• Spring Break March 6-10, 2023
• Last Day of School May 25, 2023

Approval of Texas Association of School Board Policy Manual – Update 118

The Board of Trustees approved Policy Update 118 as a result of changes made to Texas law per Texas Legislative action.
