City of Rockwall to unveil butterfly art sculptures this weekend

Rockwall, Texas – May 17, 2022 – As the City of Rockwall prepares for the unveiling of the Butterfly Art sculptures this Saturday, May 21, there is one special group to thank for making the project happen. To kick off the project, the first sculpture was painted by local artist and retired art teacher, Susan Guzman, along with help from other artists, Lynne Milner and Cindy Mosby. Then, did you know that the rest of the butterflies were carefully hand painted by student artists from Rockwall ISD high schools?! It’s true.

After the 10 butterflies were hand crafted by City of Rockwall Parks Superintendent Brian Sartain, the pieces were delivered to students at Rockwall High School and Rockwall-Heath High School. Each student submitted a design that was approved by the City of Rockwall Art Commission. The art teachers carefully selected the students for the project, painting began in January, and each butterfly was complete and entered into the RISD District Art Show on April 8-9.

The Butterfly Art project is part of the City of Rockwall’s Art in Public Places program, which also oversaw the Guitar project, among others. This is the third Art in Public Places project, and the fourth is currently in the works. The Butterfly unveiling is just one of a number of art activities taking place on the square this weekend in conjunction with the Founders Day Festival. The Butterfly sculptures will reside in each of the city’s eight butterfly gardens, as well as two more in San Jacinto Plaza and Lofland Park.
