Stevenson Elementary ACE teacher takes flight over school

ROCKWALL, TX (May 23, 2023) Students at Billie Stevenson Elementary were able to experience an exciting flyover Monday morning as Lakeshore Squadron Civil Air Patrol took teacher Julie Byrnes on a flight path directly over the school.

As one of CAP’s Aerospace Connections in Education (ACE) teachers, Byrnes welcomes Civil Air Patrol members into her classroom as part of the students’ STEM lessons. ACE teachers have access to STEM kits, lesson plans, flights and more.

Capt Mary Kay Starnes, Lakeshore Composite Squadron Commander, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, was at Stevenson Elementary tracking the flight on radar and answering student questions. The plane was piloted by LtCol John McDermott. Maj Valerie Schroder assisted at the Rockwall County Airport.

CAP is open to cadets (12-21 years) and senior members (adults 18+). They are the official auxiliary of the US Air Force focusing on aerospace education, Cadet programs, and emergency services (search and rescue, disaster relief). To learn more, visit gocivilairpatrol.com.
