Rockwall, TX (October 16, 2023) – Late last week, 382nd Judicial District Judge Brett Hall sentenced Anthony Maurice McGhee to forty (40) years in the penitentiary after McGhee pled guilty to Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1, namely, cocaine.
McGhee, 41, from Knoxville, Tennessee, was arrested on November 30, 2022 after Fate Police Officer Jay Shallow made a traffic stop on McGhee’s rental vehicle as he was traveling eastbound on I-30 in Rockwall County. After McGhee made a number of suspicious statements coupled with the suspicious nature of his alleged trip, Ofc. Shallow requested to search the vehicle which McGhee refused. Ofc. Shallow then requested a canine officer, and Rockwall Sheriff’s Office Deputy Bobby Burks and his trained and certified drug canine “Luke” were dispatched to the scene.
After Luke alerted on a box in the back of the vehicle, Officers found eight (8) kilos of cocaine that were individually wrapped and covered with mustard to camouflage the scent. McGhee was arrested and charged with the first-degree felony offense of Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance. Prosecutors later determined that McGhee had been arrested and convicted of dealing drugs in Tennessee as well.
“Through the hard work of interdiction officers with the City of Fate and Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office, we were able to take a significant amount of narcotics off the street and stop McGhee from trafficking illegal drugs in Rockwall County and in other communities,” said lead prosecutor Kim Judin.
Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper added, “This is just one more reason why drug dealers have put the word out to beware of being caught in Rockwall County with contraband. We appreciate the dedication shown by local law enforcement to arrest drug traffickers because we will certainly prosecute them.”
