ROCKWALL COUNTY, TX (Nov. 30, 2022) You may have noticed members of the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Department growing beards this month as several peace officers participate in No Shave November, a 30-day journey in which participants forgo shaving for a good cause – the fight against cancer.
The goal of the program, as no-shave.org explains, is to “grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle.”
For the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Department, this means suspending General Order 804.02 for a period from Nov. 1 through Nov. 30, during which time personnel are permitted to grow out their beards and mustaches provided they are “neat, clean, and well maintained to present a professional appearance.”
Participating Sheriff’s Department deputies began by donating a minimum of $35 to no-shave.org, benefiting the American Cancer Fund, Be The Match Foundation, GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, Fans for the Cure, Fight Colorectal Cancer, Kidney Cancer Association, National Foundation for Cancer Research, National LGBT Cancer Network, Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Special Love, Testicular Cancer Society, and Young Survival Coalition, among others.
A total of 43 Rockwall County deputies and detention officers are participating, with an approximate total of $1,660 in donations. Some chose not to grow a beard, goatee, or mustache – but still donated to this important cause.
“No Shave is especially dear to me as I have a two-year-old niece that was diagnosed with cancer at two months old. The funding provided by these amazing organizations has impacted cancer treatments and advancements so that we are blessed to celebrate her 3rd birthday in just a few weeks with her in remission,” said Sergeant John Ostrowski.
Of course when it comes to men and facial hair, there has to be contest involved – and Blue Ribbon News is excited to have once again been asked to judge the results. This afternoon – Wednesday, Nov. 30 – officers will be put in a line-up where a panel of judges – including Rockwall County Commissioner Janet Nichol, Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office HR Director Kami Webb, Joseph Horton with 1885 Barbershop, and Richard Redig with Blue Ribbon News/BRN Media – will decide who grew the best beard. Last year, Sgt. Bricker was crowned the winner, and he is sure to be a contender again this year.
