City Proclaims June 9 as Rockwall School of Music Day
ROCKWALL, TX (June 3, 2026) — A milestone three decades in the making was celebrated at Monday night’s Rockwall City Council meeting as Russ and Karen Porter, owners of Rockwall School of Music, were presented with an official proclamation declaring June 9, 2026, as “Happy 30th Anniversary, Rockwall School of Music Day” in the City of Rockwall.
Presented by Mayor Tim McCallum, the proclamation recognizes the school’s longstanding commitment to music education and its impact on generations of students throughout the community.
According to the proclamation, the Rockwall School of Music first opened its doors in the summer of 1996 and has grown into one of the area’s largest music education centers. Today, the school offers instruction in piano, guitar, drums, violin, viola, cello, bass, ukulele, voice and musical theater.
The proclamation also highlights the Porters’ vision of creating a welcoming place where children, teens, adults and seniors could explore their musical passions while finding purpose, confidence and creativity through music.
Before acquiring the school, Russ Porter served as a worship pastor and music director at churches throughout his career. The proclamation notes that he long dreamed of providing a safe and encouraging environment where community members could pursue music lessons and develop their talents.
That vision has flourished over the years. The school now employs more than 50 university-trained instructors, teaches more than 900 lessons each week and operates seven days a week to accommodate students’ schedules.
Since 2004, Rockwall School of Music, operating under Virtuoso Arts, Inc., has focused on making music education accessible and convenient for local families. The school offers multiple instructors for most instruments and flexible lesson options ranging from 30 to 60 minutes. Its mission is to connect students with skilled teachers who help them learn the music they want to play while building the skills needed for long-term success.
The city’s proclamation credits the school with training tens of thousands of students over the years through year-round instruction, recitals and performance opportunities. Many former students have gone on to pursue music degrees, become professional music educators, perform professionally or serve as worship leaders, while others have simply discovered a lifelong creative outlet.
In proclaiming June 9 as Rockwall School of Music Day, the City of Rockwall encouraged residents to join in celebrating Russ and Karen Porter and their staff for “many years of providing the gift of music to members of our Rockwall community.”
