ROCKWALL, TX (Nov. 5, 2026) Rockwall Police Detective Laurie Burks was recently recognized for her outstanding dedication and commitment to combating family violence in Rockwall County during the annual Vigil for Women in Need.
In recognition of her lasting impact, the “Laurie Burks Beacon of Hope Award” was established by Women in Need in her honor. The award will be presented annually to individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to supporting victims and making a difference in the fight against family violence.
“Day after day, year after year, Detective Burks keeps going. Her role sometimes changes and her responsibilities are ever increasing, but still her dedication is unwavering, her commitment nothing less than extraordinary,” said Kerri New, board president of Women in Need, Inc., and Family Violence Division Chief at the Rockwall County Criminal District Attorney’s Office.
New said the award grew out of a conversation with Women in Need Executive Director Kristen Ostertag about the challenges of addressing domestic violence and Burks’ steadfast service. She credited Burks’ work supporting survivors and holding offenders accountable with helping build a safer, stronger community. Detective Burks was named the inaugural recipient of this special award, celebrating her continued service, compassion, and dedication to protecting those in need.
The City of Rockwall congratulates Detective Burks on this well-deserved recognition and thanks her for the meaningful difference she continues to make in our community.
