(GARLAND ISD-December 26, 2012) Curtis Culwell may no longer be Garland ISD’s superintendent, but his legacy will live on as an advocate for education. GISD’s Council of PTAs recognized Culwell with a National PTA Life Achievement Award at its December meeting.
“A PTA Life Achievement Award acknowledges great efforts made to improve the lives of America’s youth,” said Council PTA President Suellen Atteberry. “They’re given to people who passionately advocate for education and the well-being of children.”
Culwell’s Life Achievement Award consisted of a framed certificate of recognition from the National PTA, as well as a letter from its president. Atteberry also added a few personalized gifts as tokens of appreciation for Culwell’s leadership and service to GISD the past 14 years.
“He has always supported our PTAs and has been very approachable,” she said. “We wanted to ensure that Dr. Culwell knew how much his support has meant, not only to the Council PTA, but to all of our local chapters as well. He is recognizable as a key figure in education and does what it takes to advocate for all children. He is also a strong believer in parent/teacher communication.”
One of many awards that Culwell has received throughout a 37-year career in public education, his PTA recognition makes four accolades already since summer. In June, the Texas Educational Support Staff Association (TESA) named Culwell its 2012 Administrator of the Year. He was honored at the organization’s summer conference.
“The 2012 TESA Administrator of the Year is one of the most involved, engaged and approachable school administrators,” commented a TESA publication. “He maintains that all individuals in the district have equal insight and vision, whether they are a student, educator, or paraprofessional. Not only is he a supporter of their local association, but he is affiliated with several other committees and organizations throughout the community and state. His level of commitment and support reaches far beyond the boundaries of their district.”
Culwell was also one of four 2012 inductees into the Garland Sports Hall of Fame. And, the March of Dimes organization recognized him in October for leading GISD’s fundraising efforts of more than $1 million since 2002.
