Grand opening Sunday, May 19
(ROCKWALL-May 4, 2013) A new, 18-hole disc golf course is taking shape at Smith Family Park in Fate, where the 18 members of the current Leadership Rockwall class are hard at work completing their community service project.
A grand opening celebration is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 19, just in time for Leadership Rockwall’s graduation at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 22 at the Hilton at The Harbor.
An arm of the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Rockwall helps grow effective community leaders by teaching its candidates how to lead through effective communication, personal advocacy and interaction. Class members meet at least once a month for a full year, learning the civic process; exploring the history of Rockwall, Fate andRoyseCity; touring the jails and county courthouse; attending Legislative Days inAustin; and completing a community service project.
The recommendation for this year’s disc golf project was made by Fate Public Works Director Bobby Clay. A list of proposed projects was presented by each class member and narrowed down after considering costs, availability of resources and the legacy the project will leave behind. Leadership Rockwall members raised more than $14,000 for the disc golf course; opportunities are still available for hole sponsorship.
In partnership with the City ofFate, and The Life House in Rockwall who drew out the course, the community will soon be enjoying the disc golf atSmithFamilyPark, courtesy of Leadership Rockwall Class 2013.
